Honda, “Broderick? Broderick?”

In the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to be Ferris Bueller when I was 16. So while part of me was a bit put off by this beloved character being used to sell me a car that wasn’t a vintage Ferrari, I also was suitably impressed with the level of detail in Matthew Broderick’s homage to Ferris’ day off — the roller coaster rider sporting the Red Wings jersey, the license plate (SOCHOIC), the walrus. Definitely lived up to all the pre-game buzz.
Acura, “The First One”

Jerry Seinfeld goes to great lengths to try to bribe a fellow car enthusiast for the right to buy the first Acura NSX (you can have the Soup Nazi) before ultimately losing out to Jay Leno. And I thought Leno was an awfully good sport, given that his performance in this one offered the Letterman aficionados among us to point out some typical Leno behavior (i.e., swooping in and stealing something from another comic). “Leno!”
Audi, “Killing Time”

It took a little time for this one to get going … and if it had ended with the undead sucking down O-positive like it was Bud Light, it wouldn’t have made our “loved it” list. But just when you thought this ad was going to be an unbelievable waste of $3 million, the Audi’s headlights started sending vampires back to hell. Nice twist.
Doritos, “You Didn’t See Nuthin”

Cat-killing dog bribes his owner to look the other way on his feline-icide with a bag of Doritos. One of the funnier ads of the night, even if cat lovers might not agree.Kia, “Mr. Sandman”

The Sandman accidentally dumps a little too much sand on a sleeping man, resulting in the mother of all dreams, complete with sporty Kia, Motley Crue, MMA action and many, many attractive women. The conclusion, in which the dreamer busts out of his dream and reclaims his wife from the Fabio wannabe currently romping through her own subconscious, was classic.
Volkswagen, “Working Out Like a Dog”

Looks like you aren’t the only one whose New Year’s resolution was to lose a little weight. The motivation for the dog — must lose weight to chase VW bug — nicely tied the actual product to an amusing concept.
Chrysler, “Halftime in America”

Chrysler is making a cottage industry out of creating commercials that make us believe in America again, following up last year’s Eminem offering with another winner, this one featuring Clint Eastwood. Now, whether they make you want to buy a Chrysler … that’s another story. But there’s no denying the power of Dirty Harry informing us that it’s “halftime in America.”
Chevy, “The End of the World”

In this ad, the Mayans’ theories about 2012 prove frighteningly accurate and Chevy drivers are the only ones who survive the ensuing apocalypse. While some may not agree, I liked the bow tie taking a shot at their competition; Dave, the Ford driver, doesn’t survive.
Toyota, “Reinventing Ourselves”

It’s tough to remake a car that’s been among the best-selling in the United States for more than a decade seem new. OK, so this commercial won’t exactly do that, but its premise — in which everything from babies (they don’t poop!) to the DMV (soft serve ice cream!) gets a thorough reworking — was cute.
Skechers, “Dog Race”

The canines were the big winners of the night. When they weren’t killing cats or working out, they were wearing Skechers and running races. And is it just me, or was that little guy moon-walking across the finish line foreshadowing Ahmad Bradshaw’s game-winning touchdown?

They got some help from Patriots coach Bill Belichick, whose late-game risk didn’t turn out as he planned. Belichick reasoned the Giants would run the clock down and kick a short field goal, so he gambled by allowing the six points.

The ploy failed.

”Ball was inside the 10-yard line, a 90 percent field goal conversion,” he said. ”Sure, could have done a better job in a lot of things.”

Fun from Radio Row

Manning did everything asked of him in the final minutes, a habit for the eight-year veteran. He’s beaten the Patriots in two thrilling Super Bowls. The Giants (13-7), who stood 7-7 in mid-December, now own the football world, and Manning owns two Super Bowl MVP awards, the same number as Brady.

It was a classic I-can-top-that showdown with the outcome in doubt until the last desperation pass fell to the turf as the last second ticked off the clock. Manning started the game with nine straight completions, a Super Bowl record; Brady hit 16 straight over the second and third quarters, breaking Joe Montana’s Super bowl record of 13.

Manning finished 30 for 40 for 296 yards and one touchdown, while Brady was 27 for 41 for 276 yards with two TDs and one interception.

”It’s been a wild game, a wild season,” Manning said.

Manning led six comeback victories during the season and set an NFL record with 15 fourth-quarter touchdown passes. He showed that brilliance in the clutch on the winning drive, completing five passes, starting with a sensational 38-yard sideline catch by Mario Manningham.

On second down at the Patriots 6 and with only one timeout remaining, Belichick had his defense stand up as Bradshaw took the handoff. Bradshaw thought about stopping short of the end zone, then tumbled in untouched.

”I was yelling to him, `Don’t score, don’t score,”’ Manning said. ”He tried to stop, but he fell into the end zone.”

Brady couldn’t answer in the final 57 seconds, although his heave into the end zone on the final play fell just beyond the grasp of lunging All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski. New England (15-4), winner of 10 straight since a loss to the Giants in November, was done.

Brady headed off with his head bowed, holding his helmet, still one short of the record four Super Bowl victories by Terry Bradshaw for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Montana for the San Francisco 49ers.”Certainly it wasn’t one play that was the reason we lost,” Brady said. ”Everybody feels they could do a little more. I’d rather come to this game and lose than not get here.”

All around him was the wild celebration by the Giants, NFL champions for the eighth – and perhaps most unlikely – time.

”Great toughness, great faith and great plays by a number of guys today,” Manning said, deflecting some of the attention. Still, he beat Brady. And he went one better than Peyton, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback who has one ring of his own but didn’t play this season as he recovered from neck surgery.

”It just feels good to win a Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter where you are,” Manning said.

It was the fifth trip to a Super Bowl for Brady and Belichick, tying the record. And it looked like a successful one when they stormed back from a 9-0 deficit and led 17-9 in the third quarter. But the Giants, who reached New England territory on every possession except a kneeldown at the end of the first half, got field goals of 38 and 33 yards from Tynes. And it looked like Tynes, who kicked them into the Super Bowl four years ago at Green Bay and again this year at San Francisco, both in overtime, would get called on again.

Then Belichick, known to try just about anything in a game, took a risk that didn’t pay off.

The Giants are the first Super Bowl winner that was outscored during the regular season. They were 6-2 after that 24-20 victory at New England, then lost four straight and five of six.

Coach Tom Coughlin insisted ”the prize” was still within reach. Now the Giants are holding tight to that Vince Lombardi Trophy.

”What I was concerned with was these guys making their own history,” Coughlin said. ”This is such a wonderful thing, these guys carving their own history.”

Coughlin got his own piece of the record book as the oldest coach, at 65, to win a Super Bowl.

It was the Giants’ fourth Super Bowl championship, more than any franchise except Pittsburgh with six and San Francisco and Dallas with five, and they became the first team to finish the regular season 9-7 and win the title.

New England had the ball for all of one play in the first 11 1-2 minutes, and that play was an utter failure, a rare poor decision by Brady. After Steve Weatherford’s punt was downed at the New England 6, Brady dropped to pass in the end zone and had time. With everyone covered and Giants defensive end Justin Tuck finally coming free to provide pressure, Brady heaved the ball downfield while still in the pocket.

The Giants were awarded a safety for Brady’s grounding in the end zone.Manning, meanwhile, couldn’t have been more on target early, hitting six receivers in the first period. He also was aided by Ahmad Bradshaw, who hardly looked like a running back with a bad foot. Bradshaw broke a 24-yard run, and New England made another critical mistake by having 12 men on the field on a third-and-3 on which the Giants fumbled.Instead, New York got a first down at the 6, and two plays later Victor Cruz beat James Ihedigbo on a slant to make it 9-0, prompting Cruz to break into his signature salsa move.Manning’s first incompletion didn’t come until 1:19 into the second quarter. At that point, it was 9-3 after Stephen Gostkowski’s 29-yard field goal. The Patriots got to the Giants’ 11, but All-Pro DE Jason Pierre-Paul blocked a third-down pass.Soon after, when the Patriots had a three-and-out and Pierre-Paul blocked another throw, Belichick and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien had a quick discussion. Then O’Brien, soon to take over as Penn State coach, went over to the struggling Brady. The talk must have helped. On the final series of the opening half, Brady was masterful. Starting at his 4, and ignoring the last time the Patriots began a series in the shadow of the end zone, he was vintage Brady. With New York’s vaunted pass rush disappearing, Brady went 10-for-10 for 98 yards, capping the drive that included two Patriots penalties with Woodhead’s 4-yard TD reception with 8 seconds to go in the half. Hernandez and Woodhead each had four catches on the drive that, stunningly, put New England ahead despite being outplayed for so much of the first 30 minutes.Brady kept firing – and hitting – in the third quarter, with five more completions. The Giants didn’t come within shouting distance of the record-setting quarterback. He capped a 79-yard drive to open the second half with a 12-yard TD to Hernandez, but then the game turned. Again.Consecutive field goals by Lawrence Tynes of 38 and 33 yards brought New York within 17-15. Brady then threw deep for his tight end after weaving away from two pass rushers. His throw was short, and Chase Blackburn picked it off early in the fourth quarter.Although the Giants moved into New England territory again, as they did on every drive to that point, they bogged down and punted. In the end, though, New York made the critical plays, just as it did in 2008. With Manning in the lead.”Two hundred and twenty-eight countries just saw Eli,” running back Brandon Jacobs said. ”I don’t have to say anything.”

There were no wardrobe malfunctions, but Madonna’s halftime act at Super Bowl XLVI didn’t exactly go off without a hitch Sunday.Accompanying artist M.I.A., 36, flipped the bird toward a camera just before a cutaway during the halftime show. It seemed a blip on the radar of an otherwise successful production, in which Madonna, backed by a marching band dressed as soldiers of antiquity and a capacity crowd armed with flashlights, tacked on to the tradition of increasingly extravagant Super Bowl halftime shows. Some of hip-hop’s biggest acts joined Madonna, who promised no controversy in pre-show interviews. The pop icon, 53, said earlier during Super Bowl week there would be no wardrobe malfunctions, a la Super Bowl XXXVIII when Justin Timberlake tore off a piece of Janet Jackson’s top.

Hip-hop artist Cee Lo Green led a marching band, and LMFAO joined Madonna at center stage for a rendition of their 2011 hit Sexy and I Know It, which seemed to get the biggest rise out of the Lucas Oil Stadium crowd. The show, which borrowed the creative direction of Cirque du Soleil, featured several dancers bouncing about on a highwire above the stage, not unnoticed by the buzzing crowd.

Madonna concluded with Like a Prayer (1989), accompanied by a sparkling array of flashlights in the stands. Images and videos of M.I.A.’s gesture lit up the Internet.
We know some of you folks simply prefer MMA and believe me, there’s plenty of that to go around, but we also know there are just as many football fans, including myself. So let’s have some fun with this.

After all, it’s the last game until next season.

After the jump, get all the information you need to know on today’s game from the official kickoff time to a live stream online.

Star-divide

Super Bowl XLVI takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, for the very first time thanks in large part to Peyton Manning and his many successes with the Colts that helped get the stadium built. Ironically enough, he’s likely going to be playing for a different team next year.
Super Bowl XLVI is scheduled to officially kick off at 6:29 p.m. ET time. The NFL is rather stringent when it comes to kickoff times, so you can bank on that football flying through the air right around 6:29 p.m. ET time (5:29 p.m. local).
Super Bowl XLVI will be broadcast live on NBC with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth doing commentary. Of the many “A-team” broadcasters, they’re one of the very best. However, if you can’t get to a television and you’re only able to get online, there’s no need to search for an illegal stream. For the first time ever, NBCSports.com will stream the game on its site.
The Super Bowl XLVI halftime show will feature Madonna in the NFL’s latest bid to find a really old performer who won’t embarrass them on live television. If you’re looking to place blame for the recent spate of old time musicians rocking at the big game, you can thank Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake for trying to get cute and ruining it for everyone.
The Patriots are favored by three points despite the fact that they lost to these same Giants earlier this year by four points at home.

Mitt Romney confirmed his status as the prohibitive front-runner in the GOP presidential race Saturday with a win in the Nevada caucuses. But Romney’s apparently large margin of victory may say more about his opponents than his own candidacy. While Romney’s first-place finish was never really in doubt, the lack of traction from the two men vying to be the top non-Romney candidate in the race was perhaps the biggest development. Newt Gingrich, whose campaign was riding high after its win in the South Carolina primary just two weeks ago, has fallen quickly since then. Almost instantly after the South Carolina contest Jan. 21, Romney’s campaign regained its position atop the polls and delivered a double-digit win in Florida.Four days later in Nevada, he obliterated Gingrich.

Now, the fact that Gingrich finished so far behind Romney might seem forgivable. This is a state, after all, where eventual 2008 nominee John McCain finished a distant third to Romney, behind even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), with 13 percent.

Gingrich still may finish behind Paul himself. But while McCain didn’t seriously compete in the Silver State four years ago, Gingrich has been in Nevada since Wednesday, and his performance has been pretty disastrous. Basically every day this week, there has been something to suggest a campaign that’s not really ready for prime time — be it scheduling snafus, incorrectly leaking that Donald Trump would endorse his campaign, or the candidate apparently being unaware of a pretty significant jobs report on Friday.

And in fact, this is the second state where that’s happened.

In Florida, Gingrich stumbled through two debate performances, and his decision to attack Romney for being anti-immigrant backfired badly. His campaign behind-the-scenes wasn’t getting it done either, as Sasha Issenberg reported Wednesday.

So Gingrich is now two states past his big win in South Carolina, and he’s given virtually no indication that he’s capable of running the kind of delegate-accumulating, long-term campaign that he keeps promising. That’s not to say he can’t; just that he hasn’t shown that he can.

The other candidate who might have a chance to defeat Romney, Rick Santorum, has gotten even less momentum following him being declared the winner of the Iowa caucuses, finishing third in every state since then and likely fourth tonight.

Even when Gingrich fell back to earth in Florida, Santorum couldn’t pick up the pieces and saw his share of the vote remain basically unchanged.

Nevada, if you’re counting, is the second straight state where Santorum won’t be present on election night. Instead, he’s focusing on Tuesday’s contests in Colorado and — mostly amazingly — in Missouri.

The fact that Santorum is putting any emphasis on the Missouri primary, where no delegates are at stake and Gingrich isn’t on the ballot, shows that he’s fighting for traction.

The strategy is perhaps sound; if he competes with Romney head-to-head in Missouri, after all, he can argue that he would be the better anti-Romney candidate and hopefully attract a conservative base that has yet to coalesce around Gingrich.

But the payoff is pretty minimal for Santorum even if it works out, and the cost is pretty steep if it doesn’t. People aren’t likely to pay much attention to a Missouri contest where Romney isn’t really trying and where nothing is at stake, and if Romney still cruises to victory, Santorum’s electability argument is totally shot.

Gingrich and Santorum are running out of time in their quest to be taken seriously as Romney foes. Losing is one thing; losing badly without any signs of life is much worse.

And that’s the biggest takeaway from today’s Nevada caucuses.

Adam Lambert has been apparently chosen to front Queen for their summer tour. The former American Idol contestant revealed that he will sing the songs made famous by Freddie Mercury when the group begin the tour later this year. Lambert, who performed with the group on the American Idol finale in 2009 and the MTV EMAs last year, said he will not be trying to emulate former frontman Freddie, but just wants to give fans what they want. He is quoted as telling the Daily Star: ‘The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie and the band by singing some f*****g great songs. ‘It’s to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of.’ Following their collaboration last year, Queen’s drummer Roger Taylor expressed his desire to work with Lambert on a future occasion. He told Billboard.com at the time: ‘He has grown into a really great performer with an astonishing voice with a range that’s great. We would like to work with him again. ‘There’s nothing signed just yet but we’re talking about live dates. It could be very exciting.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2096230/New-Queen-frontman-Is-Adam-Lambert-new-Freddie-Mercury.html#ixzz1lTx5aoxk Tweet

Per the DMN, among other places, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was spotted consuming alcohol in a bar this week.A ballplayer drinking in a bar would normally, of course, be a non-story, but given Josh Hamilton’s history of substance abuse, he’s been outspoken about avoiding drugs and alcohol. This relapse comes at a time when the Rangers and Hamilton are supposedly talking about a long-term contract extension, which would keep Hamilton from becoming a free agent at the end of this season. Along with the issue of Hamilton’s history of health issues, Hamilton’s past history of substance abuse is a concern that comes into play in determining how much to commit to Hamilton, and for how long. A Rangers spokesman acknowledged the existence of a “situation,” but said nothing else about what is going on, and all we really know at this point is that Hamilton was reportedly drinking.
