On New Year’s Eve thousands of red winged blackbirds tumbled from the sky in Beebe, Arkansas. According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, a tug boat operator noticed thousands of dead drum fish. Experts estimate somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 fish died.
Fisheries officials said the fish would be unsafe to eat and the mystery was being investigated.
An estimated 500 red-winged blackbirds and starlings have been found dead in Louisiana – just a few days and a short distance away from where thousands more plummeted to their death in Arkansas.
